Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed his concerns about Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s bowling unit, which conceded the highest total in Indian Premier League history to Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
RCB chose to bat first against SRH, and a tsunami of boundaries hit the stadium as the Pat Cummins-led side broke their own record and posted the highest IPL total ever: 287/3. Each bowler who finished his four-over spell conceded more than 50 runs on the record-breaking night.
Reece Topley took a wicket but conceded 68 runs. Yash Dayal conceded 51 runs, Lockie Ferguson took two while allowing 52 runs, and Vijaykumar Vyshak conceded 64 runs. Throughout the tournament, RCB’s bowling unit lacked firepower, which contributed to their defeat. In seven matches this season, RCB has attempted to defend their target four times and failed once.
“RCB’s difficulties are increasing. There was talk about their bowling lineup after the auction, and they must be aware of it now. They conceded the highest ever IPL score. I agree that the surface was designed for batters, but someone needs to raise their hand and say, “I’ll get you two or three wickets,” Harbhajan wrote on his YouTube page.
Dinesh Karthik’s fighting half-century, combined with an explosive powerplay partnership between skipper Faf Du Plessis and Virat Kohli, moved RCB closer to chasing down the elusive total.
While the middle order failed to deliver after the openers left, Karthik’s fiery knock of 83 off 35 deliveries sparked hope among home fans.
“The most positive about RCB batting is Dinesh Karthik. Harbhajan added, “He has scored runs in every match.”
Coming into the match, Travis Head (102) and Heinrich Klaasen (67) blitzed SRH to 287/3.
In response, Kohli (42) and du Plessis (62) got the hosts off to a good start, but wickets fell at regular intervals slowed their chase. Dinesh Karthik once again shone with the bat, scoring an incredible 83 runs. However, it was insufficient to propel his team to victory, as RCB lost by 25 runs.
Following their sixth defeat of the season, RCB will face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Sunday.
